Information Architecture Framework for SharePoint 2007

The Information Management Framework (IMF) provides an integrated approach for the management of information through standards and orientations based on guiding principles. Conforming to related legislation, best practices and standards generally recognized in relevant markets, it champions a common vision in organisations. It serves as the reference for all content management related issues and supports the decision-making process in assessing business opportunities.

More specifically, the Information Management Framework:
  • Establishes the Information Management vision, objectives, principles and orientations,
  • Given the strategic orientations of the organisation, it expresses the obligations and compliance requirements of the organisation as per applicable legislation and regulations,
  • Establishes governance and responsibility models,
  • Provides an orientation and a framework supporting the complete spectrum of activities which make up the core business of the organisation.

Why an Information Management Framework in your organisation

The implementation of an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system must be supported by a foundation which will ascertain the scope and robustness of its architecture. The Information Management Framework (IMF) is not only an essential strategy but also a required initial phase in the establishment of any Content Management solution. Being independent of technology, the IMF is designed to evolve with the needs of the organisation and its business solutions. Its development represents a marginal fraction of the investment required for the implementation of an ECM system while delivering on wider organisational objectives.

The application of the IMF strengthens the decision process and improves the establishment of priorities, allowing the organisation to effectively pursue its orientations. It also helps the organisation to identify and assess its critical content management issues and needs, comprehensively and in a timely manner (policies, vision, organisational culture, business processes).

How InterDoc can help you

The IMF proposed by InterDoc has a structure that encompasses the full spectrum of operations and activities relating to planning, execution and evaluation underlying the management and control of organisational content. It is a three-tiered structure with the following layers:

  1. The first layer, Foundation, governs content management at large, and specifically establishes the vision, goals and guiding principles involving content against a compliance background that recognizes applicable legislation and regulations.
  2. The second layer, Principles, Orientations and Standards, governs the information life cycle, including planning for information needs, conservation requirements, document organisation principles, issues relating to the protection of personal information, etc.
  3. The third layer, Content Management Guides and Policies, defines content processing rules on an operational basis. It offers a translation of the Orientations and Standards, faithfully describing the specific requirements of lines of business and corporate services. The Guides state the roles and responsibilities and provide a global vision; they ensure a quick and effective access to Content Management rules and procedures.

Our Management Consultants have, during the last few years, been guiding large organisations in the development of their Information Management Framework. Our approach is to combine the expertise of our Consultants with that of our customers' key resources assigned to the development of the IMF, in high performance teams. Such an approach also facilitates transfer of knowledge to the customer team who will ultimately be responsible for the maintenance of the Information Management Framework.
